This is your source for an insider perspective on European six-day racing this winter. I'm still looking for sponsors to help make it all possible (here's my resume). Also feel free to make donations online using the button below; any support is appreciated and I have a list of private contributors on the site throughout the year.

The Plan.....

Overview:
European six-days function differently than any other type of bike racing. Event promoters secure their own sponsors, hire riders as independent contractors, then supply each team its own "sponsor." Teams in a traditional sense are non-existent, and riders frequently ride with multiple partners throughout the season.

As the name implies, events are held over the course of six nights of racing in what might be considered an "omnium" format. Each night includes multiple individual races that add up into an overall classification for the event. Generally, all races are competed as a Madison, with pairs of riders competing together in a relay fashion by way of hand-slings to transfer energy.

Last season was my first year racing the six-days and, under management of David Butterworth, partner Keven Lacombe and I scored two big stage wins at the Berlin and Copenhagen legs of the UIV Cup. We are in the process of securing invitations to more races this winter, and plan a monumental six-day campaign going into the Beijing Olympic year. This site will be updated regularly once my track season gets underway in August with some UCI track races in Pennsylvania.

I am currently searching for both cash and equipment sponsors for the track season. Please take a moment to look over my business plan for the upcoming season below, some pictures from last year, and a race resume from the last few years.

Tentative Schedule:
Aug. 3: Golden Wheel Race (PA)
Aug. 10: Festival of Speed (UCI 1)
Aug. 17: Air Products Night Finale (UCI 1)
Aug. 24: Madison Cup (UCI 1)
Oct. 3-7: Track Nationals (Los Angeles)
Oct. 22-27: Amsterdam Six Day (UCI 2)
Nov. 1-6: Dortmund Six Day (UCI 3)
Nov. 8-13: Munich Six Day (UCI 2)
Nov. 20-25: Ghent Six Day (UCI 1)
Nov. 30-Dec. 2: Sydney World Cup (UCI HC, pending selection)
Dec. 7-9: Beijing World Cup (UCI HC, pending selection)
Dec. 15-17: U25 International Challenge Cup (Vienna, UCI 3)
Dec. 17-22: Maastricht Six Day (UCI 3)
Dec. 20: International Bahnmeeting (Vienna, UCI 3)
Dec. 26: Grosser Weinachtspreis (Dortmund, UCI 3)
Dec. 27-Jan 1: Zurich Six Day (UCI 3, Pro only, pending invitation)
Jan. 3-8: Rotterdam Six Day (UCI 2)
Jan. 10-15: Bremen Six Day (UCI 2)
Jan. 17-22: Stuttgart Six Day (UCI 2)
Jan. 18-20: LA World Cup (UCI HC, pending selection)
Jan. 24-29: Berlin Six Day (UCI 2)
Jan. 31-Feb. 5: Copenhagen Six Day (UCI 2)
Feb. 7-12: Hasselt Six Day (UCI 2, Pro only, pending invitation)
Feb. 15-17: Copenhagen World Cup
Mar. 27-30: Track Worlds (England, UCI HC, pending selection)
May-June 2008, final Olympic selection camp
August 2008, Beijing Olympics (pending selection)

My goal is to participate in between six and eight UIV Cup (under age 25) six-days and start at least one pro six-day. Additionally, I would like to race World Cup events with the US National Team, and hopefully qualify for the World Championships, Continental Championships (Pan-Am Games) and Olympic Games later in the year. I plan to base myself somewhere in Germany (likely Berlin) between October 2007 and March 2008 in order to facilitate travel between events and keep myself available for last-minute invitations from promoters.

Sponsorship:
The most significant contribution I am looking for is a cash sponsor. My biggest costs are transportation, housing, and food between events--then of course airfare to and from the US. Last year a four-week trip cost about $2.5k for everything. The longer I'm there the lower the daily cost; as such, my goal is to budget the six months of racing to between $5-10k.

After a "title" or cash sponsor I would like to find equipment sponsors. Ideally that would mean at most three companies supplying some the following:

2 track framesets, headsets
2 stems
2 handlebars
2 pairs cranks, bottom brackets
2 seat posts, saddles
6 pairs tubular track tires
Others: handlebar tape, chains, chainrings, shoes, pedals, eyewear, helmets

As mentioned, each race supplies riders with unique sponsor jerseys. Thus, visible advertising space is limited to shorts, gloves, socks, and decals; equipment is an obvious exception, as its mere use is itself advertisement. Event attendance ranges from a few hundred spectators nightly at the smallest races up to 13,000 nightly at races like the Berlin Six. Most races also publish daily results, race reports, and photos online, and all HC events (World Cups, World Championships, etc) receive significant international press. For equipment sponsors, I will also have a regular "Equipment Spotlight" segment on the right hand column of the page (where photos currently appear) featuring the sponsored product and a personal review of what makes it good for my Six-Day racing.

Statistics:
From the UIV: "between September 2006 and February 2007, a total of 13 Elite/Pro 6-Days were organized on the indoor tracks in Europe. Five in Germany (Dortmund, Munich, Bremen, Stuttgart, and Berlin), three in Holland (Maastricht, Amsterdam, and Rotterdam), two in Belgium (Gent and Hasselt) and one each in France (Grenoble), Switzerland (Zurich), and Denmark (Copenhagen)."

Spectators/Visitors: "the 13 six-days were attended by approximately. 540.000 spectators, which means that more than a half million people watched track-cycling live in Europe during the winter. Add to this an unknown number of visitors on TV (national television as well as local)."

Riders/Participants: "87 different riders from 15 nations participated in the Elite-Pro 6-Days. Another 118 riders from 16 nations participated in the UIV Talents Cup (Under 25). Additionally, a number of riders participated in Grand Prix for sprinters and stehers. The total amount of contract-money and prize-money in the 13 six-days is app. € 2.700.000. It was possible for a rider to participate in maximum of 12 six-days (as the races in Dortmund and Grenoble where ridden on the same dates)."
